1. Who are you?
2. What do you do?
I produce music, play live and DJ.
3. Where do you often create/produce?
In my bedroom in LA.
Whenever I get chance. Honestly, live sets are super useful for me as deadlines to get new tracks finished by. I’m trying to get better at not feeling pressured to achieve things on someone else’s timeline or compare myself to what I perceive as other people’s successes. Lately, life has been getting in the way of making music. But now it’s Scorpio season and that’s when I shine, soJ
5. Why do you play music?
Because I have to.
6. When did you start making music?
Depends on the iteration—I started playing piano as a five-year-old, composed classical music for a few years, did that whole thing. But I’ve been making music solo as Ghorba since 2017.
7. Which track defines you the most?
I keep struggling to answer this question and when I don’t know how to solve something I usually look up the definition of the word. “State or describe exactly the nature, scope, or meaning of…” yeah, I can’t do that with a piece of music! It’s always changing, because we all are. God is change, and all that.
8. How would you describe your own music?
Percussive, playful, acid-inflected. I *try* to make what I consider to be interesting techno.
9. Any track of the moment?
Summer Walker – Girls Need Love lmao. Thanks Felisha for showing me this gem 🙂
10.What influences your work?
Nature, raves, laughing on the dancefloor, sleep deprivation.
11.What’s your academic background? Are you an autodidact?
Perhaps unfortunately I did study classical music and got a degree in music. With electronic music, I’ve had some very helpful friends and partners show me a thing or to, but for the most part, I’m self-taught by YouTube University (I think everyone is at this point, right?)
Another IMPOSSIBLE question. I adored the Elena Ferrante series but there have been so many before and since…
14.Favorite classic movie?
I actually don’t watch any classic movies.
15.Favorite music label?
Wow so many. Besides Jacktone Records, which is run by the best people, right now I’ve been having a lot of luck with Australian labels like Steel City Dance Discs, Sumac and Green Fetish Records. Mama Snake’s Amniote Editions has been putting out amazing things as has New York Trax. Always love Lobster Theremin. Also just was at New Forms Festival and saw the PTP showcase there and it blew me away.
16.Your dream collaboration?
With all my live set idols! Isabella, Liquid Asset, Felisha Ledesma, Bergsonist, Via App, Beta Librae… lots and lots and lots.
17. Are you analog or digital?
18.Which soft wares/tools/ instruments do you use/play?
Roland TB-03, Roland TR-8, Elektron Octatrack, Access Virus B, Cathedral reverb pedal, Eventide Timefactor delay. Then I just record straight into Ableton. I’m about to switch up my drum machine and also start down the Eurorack wormhole… wish me luck…
19.Describe your creative process?
Sit down, start noodling on a synth to write a line I like, start jamming on the drum machine to come up with something to go with it, sample something into the Octatrack, mess around with samples in there for a bit, turn some knobs, turn some more knobs, get a result I feel okay with, make note of what I’ve just been doing, take a break. Repeat.
20.When are you the most prolific (creatively)?
When I have a live set I have to prepare for!
21. Any favorite record stores? (Real/virtual)
In the LA area, Dr. Freeclouds Record Shoppe. Online, BANDCAMP!
22.What’s your life philosophy? (Optimistic/pessimistic)
Right now I’ve been meditating on your most important relationship in life being with yourself
23. Do you have a healthy lifestyle?
I think so. I don’t drink, eat vegan, take care of my gut health, try move my body regularly and listen to what it’s telling me.
24. How do you manage your time effectively? (Job/hobby)
Google docs, to-do lists and calendar events. I plan out my days to balance money work and creative work (rarely the same thing lol) and also try to factor in friend time, time for myself and exercise.
25. Any secret skills?
26. Any future plans?
Finally record these tracks that have been sitting on my machines for forever, send them to labels, put out another release or two, be a kind person.
27.What’s your life motto?
I don’t always take my own advice on this, but: Done is better than perfect.
28. Any “mot de la fin”?
Thank you, Selwa, for all that you do!
