1 – Who are you?

John Barclay.

2 – What do you do?

Most people know me as a rave entrepreneur (Bossa Nova Civic Club/White Label Yerba Mate Soda) but I also make music, formerly in DUST and currently as Liquid Soap.

3 – Where do you often create/produce?

I converted a small bedroom in my apartment into a studio that I share with a few friends.

4 – When?

Usually after midnight.

5 – Why do you play music?

It feels great and constructive.

6 – When did you start making music?

When I was around 15 years old I started playing drums in a grunge band.

7 – Which track defines you the most?

Of my own? Probably “Drink Soap” by my last project, DUST.

8 – How would you describe your own music?

Elf Warfare Fantasy Techno

9 – Any track of the moment?

10 – What influences your work?

Ancient civilizations, contemporary geopolitics, love, art, pain, sex, etc

11 – What’s your academic background?

I have an English Degree.

12 – Favorite designer?

Safwat Riad.

13 – Favorite book?

Lord of the Flies.

14 – Favorite classic movie?

15 – Favorite music label?

16 – Your dream collaboration?

Pet Shop Boys

17 – Are you analog or digital?

Strictly digital.  A decade ago I used to perform live with a 303 clone, a 909, a juno 106 and a space echo.  I thought everyone was gonna hail me as some sort of analog messiah.  No one cared at all and I have thus turned over to the dark side.

18 – Which soft wares/tools/ instruments do you use/play?

Like literally the laziest, most generic ones. Sometimes I will open up a soft synth and use the very first preset without even altering the effects or anything. I still have unresolved trauma from my analog phase and this is my way of lashing out.

19 – Describe your creative process?

For this release, specifically, I had a multitude of riffs that, to me, felt both overdramatic and perhaps “mystical” or something.  I started to weave the separate riffs together and overlaid them with sword fights, war speeches, time travel noises, stuff of that nature. I used that as a starting point to develop a fictional narrative in my head and then rearranged and elaborated upon the audio, the narrative, and the imagery (designed by Safwat Riad) until I came up with something that almost makes sense.

20 – When are you the most prolific (creatively)?

Usually when marijuana is present but it’s always a gamble.

21 – Any favorite record stores? (Real/virtual)

Youtube, Hot 97.

22 – What’s your life philosophy? (Optimistic/pessimistic)

I suppose it depends on the day.

23 – Do you have a healthy lifestyle?

Absolutely not.

24 – How do you manage your time effectively?

Right now I feel crushed by the amount of things I need to get done, list’s tend to help me organize what I need to do and how much time I should dedicate to each task.

25 – Any secret skills?

26 – Any future plans?

I would like to release more music and figure out a live routine.

27 – What’s your life motto?

 I should figure one out.

28 – Any “mot de la fin”?

Thank you for giving me and so many cool artists a platform!
