1. Who are you?
2. What do you do?
I’m an artist and I make music.
3. Where do you often create/produce?
At home mostly but I get a lot done on trains and in hotels.
4. When?
I start making things when I wake up but I mainly work late at night.
5. Why do you play music?
Music has always been a massive part of my life. It had an important part to play in defining who I was growing up, finding things I identified with and finding things I passionately hated…. aesthetically, socially and politically….. basically the music I make now is an extension of that.
6. When did you start making music?
I think it was around 2003, I started messing around DJing and playing about with samplers. Then about 2005 I started trying to make tracks, and did this for years.
Probably: Gina X – No G.D.M
8. How would you describe your own music?
Titotular bosh.
9. Any track of the moment?
Lots of different things….. music, clubs, galleries, internet, conversations, equipment……boredom.
I think anti-inspiration has a lot to play in my creative processes. i.e. What don’t I like, what annoys me or figuring out what is wrong with something.
11.What’s your academic background? Are you an autodidact?
I studied Art at university but spent all my time learning how to make music.
12.Favorite designer?
Qubik – Joe Gilmore
13.Favorite book?
I don’t have one favourite really but for the sake of it I’d say: Thus Spoke Zarathrustra.
14.Favorite classic movie?
The first film that came to mind was: Withnail and I.
15.Favorite music label?
There too many to choose and it changes day by day but Editions Mego has always been insane.
17. Are you analog or digital?
My music production is digital right now but it’s played using speakers and I’m triggering things by hand.
I use a MacBook running Max/MSP to build sequencers and tools to make patterns. At the moment I’m mainly using Battery and FM8 to generate sounds.
I listen to lots……… There’s lots of time building sequencers and developing components / modules. I can spend months testing sounds and finding just combinations of synths that work together. The tracks can be really quick to make, if they aren’t they’re usually crap and need chucking.
20.When are you the most prolific (creatively)?
Usually when I have a gig coming up or an offer to do a record…. a deadline basically.
21. Any favorite record stores? (Real/virtual)
Boomkat.
22.What’s your life philosophy? (Optimistic/pessimistic)
I’m optimistic about creative possibilities but I’m really pessimistic politically.
Half and half really.
25. Any secret skills?
Yes
26. Any future plans?
Some upcoming records, collaborations and residences… . I’m really looking forward to go to India in December as part of a project commissioned by Counterflows festival. We are going to present and develop a series new works that respond to the systems and processes used in Carnatic music of South India. We’ll be doing a bit of a tour, working with some amazing musicians so I really can’t wait!!
