QA : Lucretio

1. Who are you?

I am Domenico Cipriani, also known as Lucretio.

I am a member of the The Analogue Cops, of Xenogears, of Appointment, of Third Side, of

Bratha, of Parassela, of Riviera and of Durant.

2. What do you do?

I am a dj, an electronic music producer, a live performer, a label

manager and a linguistics’ student.

3. Where do you often create/produce?

I mostly produce music at the Restoration Headquarters in Berlin,

at the Brenta Studios (in the Brenta Riviera), and in the little studio I

have in my hometown Cadoneghe (in my grandmother’s house).

4. When?

Everyday of the year, usually in the working days and most of the

times in the afternoon or in the evening. Never too late at night.

5. Why do you play music?

Music makes me feel good.

6. When did you start making music?

I started djing after college (back in 2000) and I started producing in 2006.

7. Which track defines you the most?

If I have to choose one on my tracks, I would say “What we mean” on

the forthcoming “Ile de la tour” EP on my own Machines State label

or “Want” that came out last year on Warm Sounds. If I have to choose

somebody else track, I would choose 3:

UR – Greater than yourself

Jeff Mills – Detached

Sunkids featuring Chance – Rescue me

8. How would you describe your own music?

My music is uptempo danceable R&B, solid and quite raw. It is

soulful Techno, somebody calls it Techno Garage. It is minimalistic

and functional.

9. Any track of the moment?

Marieu – Manipulate  on Hypercolour Limited

and all the  Die Roh and Okee Ru – Beam Boom Bum EP on Muscle Records.

10.What influences your work?

I am deeply inspired by: Detroit Techno and Chicago House, the

glossy soulful House music made in New York in the 90’s, the Garage

sound and the early Dubstep of London, Jazz and Punk music, by what

has been done in Brighton, Birmingham and Edinburgh in the late 90s,

and by the Techno music they used to play in Berlin until 10 years ago.

11.What’s your academic background? Are you an autodidact?

I have got a degree in Electronic Music Production at the School

of Audio Engineering (S.A.E.) of Barcelona in 2006. But since then I

have been always trying to improve my knowledge by myself, reading

books, articles, and operating manuals.. I have also got a MA in

Linguistics last year…

12.Favorite designer?

Giorgio Pininfarina.

13.Favorite book?

Richard Dawkins’ s “The Selfish Gene”.

14.Favorite classic movie?

15.Favorite music label?

Axis Records.

16.Your dream collaboration?

 With Horsepower Productions.

17. Are you analog or digital?

Well, I am definitively HARDWARE. Then, there is a lot of

confusion nowadays about this distinction. I use both digital and

analogue gear. I think you got the best results when you interact with

both technologies.

18.Which soft wares/tools/ instruments do you use/play?

Now, I am really into Elektron machines, I love them, especially

the Octatrack and the Monomachine. Then, I am always using old Akai

rack samples and Mackie mixers.

I like guitar pedals, cheap ones as well as boutique effects.

I like the analogue stuff of Vermona and MFB, and now I can’t work without a machine for strings as a Korg X3R or an E-mu Vrtuoso. I also need a tape (cassette) recorder and a gritty transistor (or tube) compressor.

19.Describe your creative process?

I never spend more than 3 hours in a track. Usually I need around

90 minutes. If it doesn’t come, it doesn’t come. I do a lot of music

and then I choose the best to be cut on vinyl. I can start from a

sample, often a large sample and build things around it or. I like to

catch that 8 bars that I love in a record and to build-up a functional

rework of it. Or I can start messing  around with synthesizers and

effects to get a particular sound and then use it as the main element

of my composition. I mostly do dance floor music. Because I like to

dance, not to stand still….

20.When are you the most prolific (creatively)?

I am most prolific when I am very relaxed and when I am happy or

when I am sad or nervous. I am always very prolific when I do music

with my friends.

Rubadub (Glasgow), Ultrasuoni (Rome), Discos Paradiso (Barcelona),

LeDisque (Verona), Oye and Powerpark (Berlin), Blackmarket (London).

I am kind of an optimist…

23.Do you have a healthy lifestyle?

Mmmmmm, could be better, could be worst. I am trying to do my best…

24.How do you manage your time effectively? (Job/hobby)

I keep myself busy with the music business, but at the same time I

have also a lot of free time…and time for the family.

It wouldn’t be a secret anymore …
