1)Who are you?
I am Ivan Zhyzhkevych, and I am Tulpa. I am a pianist, a 15 year old thinker, and perfectionist.
I was born in Ukraine and left to America when I was 3 years old, and I was classically taught piano for 8 years.
2)What do you do?
I “create” or recycle the world’s sound. I do what’s physically and musically possible, but taking it at a minimal approach. The more space there is, the more emotion it can invigorate…that’s what I strive for. I make an off-beaten road of sounds that moves slowly while trees stand staring at you, and you’re wondering what’s going on.
3)Where do you often create/produce? 4)When?
I usually produce in my “studio” in America, it’s got a lot of great recording equipment and instruments. I also have a piano in Ukraine – basically I produce anywhere I can take my laptop. I find going outside, or somewhere quiet (like the woods) really helps. A surreal surrounding for the surreal sound I’m going for.
4)Well to be honest, I make music 12 to 16 hours a day. From when I wake up, to when I go to sleep.
It’s like an addiction, a passion – I just can’t stop!
5)Why do you play music?
Me personally, I make music because it’s all I can do – well at least. When I sit down at a piano, I can go non-stop with new melodies and passages. When you have something you love, and you really want your life to be blanketed by it – always chase it. No. Matter. What. The outcome to hard work, and defining yourself as a person is just incredible, and that’s why I make music. I want to be myself and do something I love.
– 1)Which track defines you the most?
I’d say my tune that really defines me, would have to be “Corners” because it has lots of organic elements while mixing that electronic aspect – and it’s pretty sad, and I like sad stuff.
2)Any track of the moment?
“Swim” by Jo-Def, I play it daily – it’s just so addictive.
3)What influences your work?
Pretty much artists on Soulection, music from the 1940’s-1980’s, and the world. Also, Odd Future is pretty influential to me.
4)Do you consider yourself as an Artist? If so, why?
I do indeed consider myself one, because I feel I can sit down at my instrument of choice (Piano) and play anything my head can think of…and that feels very artistically centered to me.
5)What’s your academic background? Are you an autodidact?
Still in highschool since I’m 15!
7)Favorite Classic movie?
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, that movie is just the best.
Probably “Catching Fire” of the Hunger Games Trilogy.
9)Favorite word ( that you most overuse)?
10) Favorite music label?
11) Your dream collaboration?
(Henry Krinkle even though we did that, and I’d gladly do another one with him), LAKIM, Ta-ku, Sango, Jo-Def, STWO…the list is long haha
12) What’s your life motto (quote)?
“Don’t step first, when the second step is last”.
13) Any “mot de la fin”?
“Don’t stop doing what you love, and if you lose the passion then you lose yourself”.
